I've gotten a pair of Avet 50w that I just exercised this weekend (successfully!) and cleaned them up with fresh water. New-in-box, the hex bolts holding in the side covers were filled with grease.

Q: is this to prevent non-stainless bolts from rusting, or to add more water-seal around the area?
Q: Should I keep those external bolt holes greased, or let it go?

Thanks for comments

Alan tannis web site gives a good tutorial on initial detailing of the reel. at a minimum, all stainless screws shuold be removed, lightly greased then retightened. This is to help nullify the effects of galvanic corrosion between 2 dissimilar metals (stainless and aluminum). At the end of last season I completely disassembled my 30's and 50's, washed the parts in warm soapy water, dried them, then reassembled making sure to put a light coating of grease on all internal areas, screws, corrosion X on the 2 spool bearings leaving the covers off and packing all remaining bearings (outer spool x 2 and gear handle X2) with grease then re-insterting dust caps/seals.

I did not grease my drags on these as they have been flawless so far, but I may do that this off season.
