Update: R.I. Rep. Medina arraigned on insurance policy theft charge
By Karen Ziner
LINCOLN, R.I, -- State Rep. Leo Medina, D-Providence, has been arrested and charged with misappropriation of funds involving a life-insurance policy payout, the state police said Thursday.
The felony charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, and/or a fine of up to $84,000 - three times the amount Medina allegedly stole.
Captain James O. Demers, detective commander, said Medina turned himself in at the Lincoln barracks at 4:30 p.m., where he was subsequently arraigned, then released on $10,000 personal recognizance. A warrant for his arrest had been issued earlier in the day.
Demers said the $62,000 life-insurance policy was that of a Providence man's deceased daughter. The complainant is a friend of Medina, and is believed to have done work for Medina in the past, Demers said.
The policy was to be divided equally between the complainant and the woman's mother.
Medina allegedly stole $28,000 of the life-insurance policy payout, and gave $3,000 to a lawyer, whom state police have not identified. Medina allegedly spent $24,000 of the payout, and $4,000 -- believed to be the remainder -- is in Medina's bank account, Demers said.
Medina, of Washington Park in Providence, defeated six-term incumbent Rep. Joseph S. Almeida Jr. in the September 2010 primary. He was uncontested in November.
In July, the Rhode Island Supreme Court recommended that Medina be prosecuted civilly or criminally for practicing law without a license. No civil or criminal charges have been filed in that case. |
